DIY vintage paper ornament

Hi Friends..

Thanks for coming back to my blog. Christmas is almost here and I have a fun last minute ornament you can make.  This craft can bring you and your family around the table to adorn your Christmas tree with love.  Or better yet, makes a great gift for someone that loves to receive something you made.

So while I was decorating, the antique look was inspiring me and I couldn’t wait to bring it into my Christmas decor this year.  I made a paper wreathe out of a 100 year old book not too long ago and every time I see it, my wheels are turning to find something else to make with the books I bought from Half Price Books. I was browsing my local Hobby Lobby and I happened to run across plain brown craft ball ornaments.  OH my gosh!! The old pages would look awesome on these balls.  Now Mod Podge and I have become buds lately, this glue can make anything stick and look good.

I will warn you, this is not a clean craft, your hands will get dirty and sticky. Ok so you will need these items…

supplies for craft
scissors, mod podge, thin sponge brush, old book and craft ornaments

Go ahead and tear out about 2 pages per ornament. I cut them into long strips of about 1.5-2inches wide. Now you will want to start at the top of the ornament and put your first strip going down. When you pick out your strips try to use ones that look similar, more writing then white space. Lather the ball with the mod podge where the strip will go. Then lay the strip down. I like to go ahead and put the glue on top of the paper too. You will need to use your fingers to help tack it down and work out the kinks. It’s not going to be real smooth, just do your best.  Some wrinkles won’t hurt the overall look when its all done. Now that you’ve done one strip keep going around the ball until you complete it with the rest of the strips.

(This is where I wish I could have shown you a picture of me working on it, sticky fingers and camera, no go… sorry!)

As your completing it, your fingers might get stuck to the paper. Here’s a tip..Complete one side of the ball and let it dry and then come back and do the other side. You can finish the whole ornament in one sitting, just do your best to not get your fingers stuck to often. 🙂

That’s it, you have completed a vintage paper ornament. You can finish it off with a bow or ribbon. For this look, to go with my tree, I left it plain without any embellishment. Go ahead and hang it up to dry. I used my deer to hang them from.

When I decided to make these ornaments, I needed some filler for my centerpiece display.  The ornaments were for display in the box rather then for the tree. But these simple cute and easy ornaments would be a great touch to any tree. If you try to buy these in the store they are about $3-$5 each. I only paid .99!

If you want one more craft idea…check out what’s inside the box and next to the deer. I took the exact same craft ornament from Hobby Lobby and just wrapped twine around it. The messier the wrap the better.  Confession time..my perfectionism wants the ball to look neat, not messy. When I wrapped yarn balls for my mom’s party, my niece Ashley pushed me out of my comfort and taught me messy was better. I know sometimes we just need a little push to be messy. That’s why I know you and your family will enjoy this messy project. Let me know if you try it and any tips you might have.
